Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars after their triumph in London

The sixteen finalists of the Tata Tea arsenal Soccer Stars created history at the Royal Hallway Stadium in London by winning the Plate Cup at the 18th Arsenal International Soccer Festival. They defeated ‘Marks Park’ the team from South Africa to become the first ever team from India to win the cup.

The final match had all the elements of a true entertainer and ended in a nail biting finish leaving a very beaming Indian team. The match started with the Indian kids as the underdogs. But that changed as soon as Karim Mistri from St Lawrence High School, Kolkata scored the opening goal within 8 minutes into the game. In the 20th minute Avyay Gujral from The Shri Ram School, New Delhi took the score to 2-0 putting India in a very strong position. The South Africa’s team Marks Park came back strongly in the second half and reduced the gap to 2-1 in the 5th minute. What followed was a fierce battle between the two teams but the Indian team managed to keep the score at 2-1 when the final whistle blew.

Commenting on this spectacular performance, Ms. Sangeeta Talwar, Head Marketing, Tata Tea Limited said, “The sixteen players from across the country from various social, cultural and economic backgrounds came together as a team and defeated players from some of the best soccer playing nations. The tournament, part of the Arsenal International Soccer Festival, had teams from eight countries including USA, Canada, Greece, South Africa, Denmark, England and India. The matches, a mix of league and knockout, saw the Indian team play against countries where football is well entrenched.

The winning Indian team is meeting the famed Arsenal team during a practice session at the Emirates Stadium, a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for the 16 finalists of the Tata Tea Soccer Stars.

Sixteen Indian schoolboys from 8 cities across India will travel to United Kingdom to participate in the 18th Arsenal International Soccer Festival in London. The 16 kids are the finalists of the ‘Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars’ where they will rub shoulders with top Arsenal players like Cesc Fabregas and John Djourou and also train under Arsene Wenger for a day. The coach of the team, Jamshid Nassiri announced at a press conference in Mumbai on 25th July that 15 – year old Kiran Kumar of St. Angel English High School, Bangalore would be the captain of the team while Karim Mistry of St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata will be the vice captain. Others who have been selected in the team are Arindam Mitra, Sumit Das, Jitu Das, Yan Cheng Law and Mojaffar Ali from Kolkata, Avijit De and R Deepak from Bangalore, Shane Anthony Temodo, Mario Bacchus Lobo from Goa, Rickin Dang and Siddharth Singh from Mumbai, Ajay Gujral and Danil Lalhrwaitlwanga from New Delhi and Jessammy Clivenson Tariang from Shillong.

All the boys are eager to travel aboard and be a part of the journey with some of them hailing as far as Mizoram. Danil Lalhrwaitlwanga, who got admission to Air Force School, New Delhi on a football scholarship traveled for twelve hours for the selection. A shy guy by nature he was overwhelmed by the attention he got from the media and was excited about his first journey to England. Speaking on behalf of the 16 kids, Mumbai’s Siddharth Singh said that the training programme in Kolkata under the tutelage of Arsenal’s Paul Shipwright and Martin Davis “was a completely different experience”. “They completely transformed the way we thought about football,” he said.

The former Iranian international footballer was all praise for the boys and feels that they can become superstars in India if they can work hard and improves their standards. He said, “These guys have age on their side and can make it in the big league. It is just a matter of working hard.” On being asked whether this would be a one time affair, Ms. Sangeeta Talwar, Executive Director-Marketing, Tata Tea Ltd said, “As of now the deal stand for only a year under which a couple of boys will be inducted in an academy for further grooming.”

Learning The Arsenal Way…

Thirty talented young kids chosen during the national inter-school Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars tournament gets the opportunity to get a taste of Arsenal’s youth development programme, arguably one of the best in Europe. The training camp began at CC&FC ground, Kolkata under the aegis of Arsenal coaches – Paul Shipwright and Martin Davis. Shipwright is Arsenal’s soccer school franchisee manager while Davis, also known as ‘Mr. Tricks and Flicks’ for his skills with the ball, is London club’s sports development officer. During the camp the kids will be training under the customized youth developmental programme - The Arsenal Way. At the end of the camp 15 kids will be shortlisted to attend a training camp in Arsenal FC, London and participated in the Arsenal International Soccer Festival. According to Shipwright, “This will be a unique opportunity for the boys to get some top-class training from Arsenal coaches and play a tournament where they will get a chance to compete against kids from different countries.”

St. Britto’s from Goa wins the Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars National Tournament

St. Britto’s High School (Goa) won the Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars national tournament 8-7 on penalty shoot outs, defeating Angel’s High School (Bangalore), in a very close contested finale at Howrah Municipal Stadium, Kolkata. Ms. Sangeeta Talwar, Executive Director-Marketing, Tata Tea Ltd handed over the trophy to the winning team. The trophy for the ‘Highest Goal Scorer’ was given to Myron Fernandes of St. Britto’s High School, Goa by legendry footballer, Chuni Goswami while the trophy for ‘Most Valuable Player’ was given to Karim Mistry of St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata by upcoming cricketer, Ranadab Bose. Jamshid Nassirir, Head Scout of the entire tournament, conferred the trophy for ‘Best Goalkeeper’ upon Avijeet Dey of ASC School. During the course of the competition, 30 young boys were selected to participate in a camp for 2 weeks in Kolkata, where Arsenal coaches will be training them. From the already selected, 15 promising hopefuls will be chosen further to receive training in Arsenal and participate in the Arsenal International Soccer Festival.

Young aspiring footballers gets the opportunity of their lives to train at Arsenal FC in London. This is made possible owing to Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars (TTASS), a unique talent scouting programme launched by Tata Tea in association with Arsenal FC. TTASS aims to promote football among school children and help talented young soccer players to access the best in terms of infrastructure and training. Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars programme is part of Tata Tea’s enhanced focus on the issues that concern the youth of this country. In its constant endeavour to demonstrate thought leadership, Tata Tea recently launched the ‘Jaago Re’ campaign. Tata Tea Soccer Stars, one of its kind football tournaments for children aged 10 - 15 years, offers participants access to unparalleled training programmes including the customized Arsenal development programme called The Arsenal Way. Starting from 27th January, the tournament will be played in 8 cities divided over four zones (South, West, North & East) with the finals being played at Kolkata in May. Arsenal coaches in Calcutta will train 30 talented boys, identified by Head Scout, Jamshid Nassiri for 2 weeks. Out of these 15 boys will be shortlisted to go to Arsenal FC for further training. They would also participated in the Arsenal International Soccer Festival.
